DOUBLE ACTION CANDLES----

Used to reverse a negative situation, they symbolize the positive and negative influences in your life. It is used to draw positive things to you and reverse negative things away from you, traditionally comes in three styles:

 White/black (for uncrossing spells)

 Green/black (to remove money/financial jinxes/curses)

Red/black (to remove love jinxes/curses)

Most manufactured (mass produced) double action candles have the color on top with the black on the bottom which causes practioners to cut off and level the color wick on one end (also called butting) and create a wick on the black candle end, that way the negativity is removes and sent back and then the color end burns to bring in the good.

Some individual shops make their own the correct way, in other colors with black on one end and another color to represent what one is hoping to bring in.   If you are creative you could make your own with the black end on top and the correct desired color on the bottom.   Usually worked with the appropriate oil usually Reversing Oil.

TRIPLE ACTION CANDLES----

Triple Action Candles are tri-color candles usually sold in the jumbo candle-size.

Traditional color styles include:

Red, white and blue (Love or Health, Protection, healing or peace or for returning lovers, protection legal work.)

Red, white, and green.   (Love or Health, Protection, Money or for success, prosperity and luck   )

There might be suppliers of other colors as well.

REVERSING CANDLES (Glass Enclosed)

Have Black half red

Used to reverse a situation, reverse negative energy from yourself and send it back to the sender, or uncrossing. Draws out and destroys negativity, replacing it with positive energy; returns negativity to its source.

REVERSIBLE ACTION CANDLES aka Blood Candles

These appear to be black candles, but they are really red candles coated with a layer of black wax. As the inner red color drips over the outer color (some say it looks like blood), it works to dispel evil and send it back from wherever it came. It has more strength than a regular black candle in doing this, and it also has the added bonus of drawing good luck to you after removing the bad luck. If the candle decides not to drip then just cut a little notch in the side of the top rim until the wax comes out.   Also use with a Reversing oil

ASTROLOGICAL SIGNS AND THEIR CANDLE COLORS

In the last 40 or 50 years certain colors have come to be associated with astrological signs, the list that I'm presenting here is by no means definitive---some spiritual supply stores feel that other colors are associated with those same signs---this is just to give you an idea, eventually as you work with the colors to represent the individual clients under what sign they were born you will eventually get a feel of what is right, but it does take practice and intuition---This is for your information----

Aries---Red, white, pink

Taurus:---Green, pink, red, yellow

Gemini:---Yellow, silver, green, red, blue

Cancer:---White, green, brown

Leo:---Gold, orange, red, green

Virgo:---Grey, yellow, gold, black

Libra:---Royal blue, light brown, black

Scorpio:---Black, red, brown

Sagittarius:---Dark blue, purple, gold, red

Capricorn:---Red, black, dark brown

Aquarius:---Light blue, dark blue, green

Pisces:---Aquamarine, royal blue, white, green

My Spiritual mentor Rayba (who instructed me after my Granny passed on) said that to help determine the correct color for the Astrological signs you need to know first it's element, Air, Earth, Water, Fire and then if it’s a fixed or mutable sign, by doing that you'd have a better understanding of which color works best.

For example Pisces is a mutable water sign so Aquamarine would be the right color, if not available then follow with Royal Blue, then white, then green, some are not so easy to determine so you'd need to know the general disposition of the Astrological sign as well.

As I said in another posting my Grandmother did not have colored candles to work with, hers was made from cheap paraffin wax and in the real old days from tallow or animal fat.  The colors were added by tying bits of color cloth to the candles or rolling it in the prescribed herbs and inscribing symbols on the candles.

Within the major colors that I have listed there are variations which has make the intent stronger, softer or focus in a different direction for example colors such as mauve or light blue or green even turquoise or reddish brown, as I go through my notes and sort the more subtle meanings I will post them here, so you will need to check back from time to time.

Now with colors one can focus your intent much better.

As I come across more information I will continue to update this page.  You the reader should set it so that when its updated you can be notified right away to add to your "Book of Shadows" or "Grimore".

When carving your intention, symbol or name on any candle, be sure to inscribe only deep enough to make an impression, never carve so deep as to touch or break the wick. A candle with a damaged or severed wick will not burn.

When anointing a candle with oil, one need not and should not drench the candle. A few drops will suffice, only enough to lightly cover the candle.

If pressing herbs into the wax of a candle after anointing, remember: less is more. Each individual leaf or chunk of root can be drawn into the burning wax and become a wick!

Candles have a unique place in our society today, and are also an incredible link with our past.  Candles are unique in that they convey messages of romance, warmth, spirituality, secret wishes, and brightness.   As a source of light and illumination, they are beautiful and romantic; as a tool for prayer, meditation and magik, they are mesmerizing and powerful.

From Earth, Air, Fire & Water by Scott Cunningham. "Indeed, the changes that occur when fire is touched to wick are extraordinary. The candle itself, unlit, represents the element of Earth. When touched with Fire the candle melts, producing liquid wax (representing the element of Water) and the smoke (the element of Air). This seemingly miraculous process is another reason why candles are an accepted part of folk magick."

Candles have existed for nearly as long as humans have mastered fire. Before the affordability of candles, oil lamps and lanterns were used to light homes, markets, temples, and shrines. Instead of today's neat taper or pillar made from petroleum wax, candles consisted of a shallow clay or wood vessels filled with wax or crude oil from animal fats and other natural resources.

For years most candles were made out of tallow or the fat of animals, during the ages when candles were much in use, they were regarded as precious, for the making of a candle took considerable effort and resources.

In early times, during the yearly slaughter, all the animal fat or tallow was collected and boiled down to make the years’ worth of candles & oil. These candles were used judiciously as there was no extra tallow during the winter months to make more candles, for many people to save on burning candles they would read, repair, sew and write by firelight.

Then there was bees wax candles used in churches and in homes of the wealthy or nobility, very expensive to make mostly from the used hives of bees but they burned cleanly.

Early Asian candles were made with wax from insects and plants- a more exact process that didn't make as much smoke when burned. As the techniques for making candles progressed, they became more refined.

Another that was made and also expensive are Bayberry Candles Settlers in New England used the technique of boiling and skimming over one and a half quarts of bayberries to obtain enough wax to make an 8-inch taper, this is made from the natural wax of the berry part covering of the Bayberry, it has a slight lovely scent and a faint green color and was also very expensive only the most wealthy could afford them.

When Electricity became the mode of light, candles became less important. They were used for vigils, celebrations and to represent milestones in life.  And in the case of emergencies an immediate mode of lighting, in every house or apartment there should be matches and emergencies house hold candles, because sometimes batteries die out.

Then there is in magical uses, there was the “Hand of Glory or Gory” this was made out of the hand of a hanged criminal usually a murderer and covered or dipped like a candle in his rendered body fat, legend has it that when this hand candle is burned it renders a person invisible so they can steal or commit a crime without being seen.  (This is only a legend).

But now a days candles are far more affordable because they are made from petroleum by products, although bees wax and bayberry candles can be purchased they still are on the more expensive side, and there are candles made out of soy, which many people consider to be a very healthy alternative.

Only you can chose what you want to use, or even go so far as learning how to make your own, which is fine if you have the time.  Most practitioners, because they have mundane jobs don’t have the time to do this and are forced by circumstance to purchase their candles.

So, what to choose?

There are the free standing candles that one inserts into a candle holder, they come in various sizes from 4 to 15 inches the most common size is 6 to 8 inches

They have different names: House hold candles, Pillar candles, taper candles, chime candles, votive candles, jar or glass candles.

Chime Candles are about 4 inches tall and about ½ inch thick and will burn for 2 to 2 ½ hours Perfect for Small Altars, and ritual use.  They can be done is a relatively short amount of time, unless you are planning to do a much longer ritual, then a candle about 6 inches tall is preferred.

Taper Candles range from 6 to 15 inches in height about 7/8 inches thick and will have a slender tapered end at the top.   The 15 inch candles will burn 6 to 7 hours, 12 inch 4 to 5 hours, less then 12 inches will burn for about 4 hours

Common household candles are about 6 inches in height,  and 3 /4 ‘s  of an inch  thick with a more nub type top they will burn between 3 to 4 hours, and come in various colors like those listed above, they are used not only for religious work but also for household and emergency candles.  The one’s listed for emergency use in Stores will burn longer and are typically white in color.

Pillar candles are thick candles ranging from 3 to 9 inches in height and from 2 to 6 or more inches across, they will have from 1 to 3 wicks in them depending upon ritual use and purpose.  They can be expensive but will burn for a long time as much as 4 to 7 days, in some cases as much as 14 days.

Votive candles are about 3 inches or less in height with a thickness of 1 to 2 inches, with an approximate burning time of 15 hours, you will usually see these burning in front of a saint’s statue but they are also used in ritual work as well and can be found.  They can be found in various colors and infused with various scents so selecting one for the right ritual use will take a little time but add a wonderful atmosphere to your ritual area.

Tea light candles has a 4 Hour Burn Time. The versatile tea light candle is a great value. It is a candle and a candle holder because they sit in a non-burning inexpensive candle holder, most of the time they are plain white, but some do come in colors and scents, much like the votive candles, tea lights have the advantage of all in one easy to use and very inexpensive package, you can put them in glass jars to burn safely, affordable, can be easily dressed very lightly with an oil and easy to inscribe with a needle and no one would suspect that you are using them for ritual use.

If one is in a hurry one can use white birthday candles for a quick and dirty spell or ritual, but since they do not have holders it’s considered very dangerous to use.

Besides those there are Candles that come in clear glass jars either plain clear glass or with pictures pasted or silk screened on to them.

These are called Jar candles, there are those that will burn for 50 hours or just a little over 2 days if burning continuously and there are those that are called 7 day glass jar candles.  With a burn-time of over 50 hours, these jar candles come in a 3 3/4" jar that makes them easier to clean up, and safer than votives or taper candles.

With the 7 day jar candles they come in a glass jar are about 2 inches or so thick and about 8 inches in height.

About 7-day Jar Candles their uses and safety precautions

Seven-Day Jar candles are used by parishioners of many faiths as tools for prayer, devotion, ritual, meditation, protection and healing. They are easy to use and well liked because they tend to be safer from fire hazards due to their enclosed nature. They are often used in conjunction with other spiritual products, but many people also use them alone.

Although they are called Seven-Day Jar Candles, the amount of burning time varies do to several factors. Length of candle burning depends on the energy in the environment where it is burned and what has been added to the candle (such as oils & herbs).

How a candle burns is also subject to interpretation as candles both free standing and jar will talk or do an action that will tell you how the ritual or spell is working or not working.  That will be covered in another post.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

Make sure to keep out of reach of children or pets. Place burning candles in a pot or aluminum tray with sand to avoid any accidents. You may also fill the bathtub or sink with a few inches of water and set the jar candle in the water- this way if there is an earthquake or you have to leave, it will put itself out if it falls over.

Make sure there is no cloth items near it as well such as dish cloths, curtains not even sponges all of these are flammable materials.

If you have to leave and cannot leave the candle burning safely, snuff the flame out with a candle holder never blow the candle out, and then when relighting it you can re-active it by visualizing your intent.

PROGRAMING THE CANDLE AND COLORS

All candles when purchase come undressed or “virgin”. They need to be programmed or prepared by you prior to lighting it.  They can be programed by the supply shop but it carries far more energy when you do it.

With the ones in clear glass jars you can paint symbols, anoint with oils and carefully sprinkle herbs also for your magical workings.

This procedure is called “Dressing the candle.” I will explain about how to dress a candle in a separate post.

In the color choice I have on a separate link the meaning of colors and their traditional intent.  To do a ritual in which you are going to do a candle working or spell, it is important to chose a candle color that is close to meaning and intent for you ritual.  This takes it one step closer to programing or dressing the candle for your ritual.

Remember the most important thing is what “feels right” to you. If you are distracted by the color of your candle- you will not be able to focus well in your work.  In that case it’s best to use only a white candle.

With these types of candles (House hold, pillar, jar etc.) you can chose what colors you want to represent your magical workings, (see my link to the list of colors and their meanings.)  You can carve symbols, roll them in particular herbs, anoint with ritual oils or waters.

In the old days before candles became colored, usually it was the type of herbs, or waters or oils extracted from the herbs that was used to program the candle along with any symbols or names carved on them.

Now with color it adds an extra dimension to the spell work.

FIGURE CANDLES

As early as the 1930s, spiritual suppliers provided what was called offertory candles and in addition they provided figural or "image" candles for special uses.

More expensive than plain offertory candles, figural candles caught on and became preferred by many practitioners when working unusual or extremely strong spells, the reasoning behind this is their visual symbolism is easy to see and by carving names or other features in them, they can be personalized to represent individuals, in what amounts to a cross between working with candles and working with doll-babies or poppets.

Most of the old figural candle styles are still manufactured.  Some have died out through lack of interest and the popularities of certain styles became more dominant.

As my Granny use to say   "…those old witch, pumpkin, angel, black cats and choir boy candles weren’t used just for Halloween and Christmas.”

That sure raised my eyebrows as she was teaching me.  I’ve come across several old spiritual supply catalogs that offered figure candles many are still being offered but some have fallen out of favor.

Because the list is so long, I am going to post several postings of the types of figure candles and their functions as well as the color of intent in my next several postings.

It will be a long lists over several postings, so as they come up you may want to print it out and add it to your Book of Shadows for your information.

Figure candles or candles made into specialized shapes as far as I could determine, were a sort of 20th century development from making candles by hand in the shape of a person.

These “Old-Style” candles would have been done in the shape of a man or woman and would have mixed with the wax, hair, nail clippings, some threads of clothing that they wore, if possible a few drops of their blood, much like that of a doll created for magickal workings. (some people would call them Voodoo dolls)

But they could have been used to break a hex, turn any negativity onto the wax doll instead of the person or bring something good into their lives, the negative side which one reads about or seeing in movies or T.V. is the evil workings.

For many practitioners making your own candle for a specific purpose may have more potency than buying one, however depending if we are sharing living quarters, have long hours, or wish to do this in secret, making a candle might be very hard to do, so buying one and "dressing it" may be better.

But with the creation of holiday candles especially in the 1920’s practioners discovered that there were ways of focusing intent more specifically.

As I've said Color is important for intent, so figure candles will have different colors depending upon intent.  In some cases such as the 7 Knobb candle it may have 1 knobb or section of a different color for different intents.

After I cover figure candles, I will go onto Jar Candles and then on to how to "dress" or "program" a candle.

But first let us deal with Figure candles.

I have here an alphabetical list of the types of figure candles offered in spiritual supply shops and their different functions.  Because there are so many different types I will do this in two posts:

A to L

•"Adam" (a nude male figure) and "Eve" (a nude female figure) these are separate figures individual figures if you are a woman and wish to bring someone into your life or banish them you would choose which appropriate figure for your work.

-- White to meet someone new,

Pink and red for love spells,

Blue for peacefulness at home or to bring about faithfulness,

 Black for harm or revenge.

Brown image candles are used in rituals which seek to have lost items found or returned to their owner, or to restore qualities which have been weakened or destroyed

•"Adam and Eve" (a nude couple combined) used for drawing an ideal love – Sometimes called a Unity Candle

 Green for prosperity,

Pink and red for love spells

In Burning  the  candle for live it is to bring two people together in harmony.

When lighting this candle you are representing the two people you would like to bring together. Start at night and continue for one month, light the candle one hour daily and once finished light another until your wish of bringing that person close has come true.

Special Note:  in doing love spells you must remember that you are also interfering with the Karmic destiny of the other person. Be careful because the person you think you want may not be the right kind of person for you.

Altar Candles: The Altar Candles are used to represent the Deities or Powers with which you wish to communicate. This is a method of honoring them and their presence while tapping into their energy.

Two Altar Candles are placed on the altar, one to the left side and one to the right. The candles must always be taller and longer burning than any others on the altar. They must be lit first and extinguished last. Which of the Altar Candles is lit first depends on the type of Magick you are performing.

Color not withstanding, the right candle (facing you) represents male energy while the left represents female energy. Much like in the Catholic church the right smaller altar is dedicated to St. Joseph and the left smaller altar is dedicated to the Blessed Mother.

ANGEL Candles  they come in a variety of colors, and according to color, used for healing, higher learning, spirituality, creativity and workings with angel magick or angel rituals, see also Guardian Angel candles.

Astral Candles: These are "Personal Candles" of colors and shapes you feel right for you or another person.  They can be substituted for Zodiac candles.

•"Baphomet" or "Sabbatic Goat Candle" Some people confuses these with the Devil candles, two totally different styles and use. The Baphomet candle is the most sacred symbol of witchcraft and has been referred to as the God of the Witches, possibly in relation to the pagan god Pan, Use it to increase one's powers in any situation, to attract love, money or better health and to repel unfavorable influences.

-- Red for Controlling and Commanding of others as well as for lust spells, sex magick

--- Black -- as protection magick, but also for mischief. On the flip side it can be used for worship of bestial or satanic forces.  Be very careful in invoking this action.

Bees Wax Candles---These are candles that are made out of pure bees wax from the used honey combs of bees after the honey has been extracted, these are very pure and natural candles, usually they are only in the color of the honey comb, except for either molding it nothing else has been done to it.

I have found that when I do the Rosary, that it’s best to do it by candle light and I light my Bees wax candle that I have specifically set aside for this much higher spiritual work or ritual. The purity of it feels very sacred, usually I will burn a stick of Frankincense or Frankincense and myrrh while I pray and meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary.  I usually will do it when the Sun  sets at the end of the day.

•"Black Cat" aka Cat Candles --   Although commonly called Black Cat candles they do come in different colors.

Burn  a Black Cat Candle to reverse one's bad luck and draw the good luck. The burning of a black cat candle in the prescribed manner is intended to reverse one's bad luck and draw the good luck. To intensify the force of the candle, anoint it with any of the "lucky oils".   To intensify the force of the candle, it can be anointed with any of the lucky oils- Fast Luck, Gamblers, Jockey Club, Lucky Dog or Black Cat are some of the most widely used.

Traditionally one lights the candle and burns it for seven minutes the first night, eleven the second evening, then seven again on the third night, eleven on the fourth, seven on the fifth, etc. Alternate the burning time each evening between the seven and eleven minutes until enough good luck is attained this is for Gambler’s Luck but can also bring in other good things or to banish negative things.

Green – bring luck and money, Anoint the green cat candle with Money Drawing or Wealthy Way Oil. Write the amount of money needed for a specific purpose on a square of parchment and place it beneath the green cat candle light it and burn it  in the prescribed manner as the Black Cat candle until the needed amount is obtained.  It can also be used to help aid in healing a sick pet.

Red – attract love and affection, can be used for love objectives by anointing them with an appropriate love oil and burning them when the loved one is present also burn in the prescribed manner

Black – turn back evil and also to bring Gambler’s luck.

Green - Bring money and fast luck (this is the most popular)

Red - Draw love and respect

-Cat Candles see Black Cat

Charka candles:  usually these types of candles are enclosed in glass, but I have seen them in pillar or freestanding form.  They contain the seven colors of the energy vortexes of the body: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, and white.

Some candle makers pour the colors from red to white,  that is from root charka to crown where others may pour the colors from white or crown  to red or root.

The charkas candles work great for meditation, cleansing of body and mind, house blessings, and other activities where you feel you need the full spectrum of color in the magickal activity

Compass Candle:     Used mostly in divination.  A Compass or Directional Candle is employed to help you determine a specific direction to take in life. It is usually a taper that drips freely when lit.

After assigning each of the four quarters (North, South, East and West) or  a direction that you believe you would like your life to proceed in, observe the candle closely.

The wax will drip in the direction that is best for you to take, not necessarily the one you might want, but you will be told what is best based on your present abilities or location to move to.

•"Cross" or "Crucifix" candles:  there are two types with two different designs and each has their own specific name.

Keys and a book on a flaming cross ("Master Key Crucifix Candle")

Four-leaf clover on a cross ("Lucky Clover Crucifix Candle")

A beautiful waxen candle replica of the Floral Cross. The ideal molded candle for home or church altars, for all devotions and petitions. The Cross Candle is popular as a daily candle; many believers burn one each day of the week, choosing the color which is appropriate for that particular day –

White for spiritual purity and insight, Special requests, spirituality and uncrossing a difficult situation. Burn every Sunday to keep the home safe and the family harmonious for the entire week

Black for personal power and conjure work, or to Send evil forces to away

Brown for court cases and legal matters,

Green for money spells, Success, fast luck & fertility or creativity

Red for love spells, or Courage, Strength, Vitality

 Orange for change,

It would not be unusual to see white cross candles on an altar for spiritual devotional work or in the home of a Catholic.

Devotional Candle: Devotional Candles, are form of Novena Candle, are usually those found in picturesque, heat resistant glass containers but of late I have been finding them as pillar or freestanding candles so the information here I'm providing as a service to avoid confusion.  The pictures on the glass are usually of various Saints while a prayer is normally inscribed on the reverse.  I will talk about these further under Jar Candles

Dehexing Candle:  This have a two-fold meaning, the first and most common is a reversible candle which is usually black coating a red candle to reverse a situation, sometimes also referred to as a Double action candle which will send negative energy back and bring in good energy.

The other type of Dehexing candle is when you are doing a ritual and expect some negative or hexing energy to come back at you especially if you are also working against negative energies from another practioner.  So during ritual and afterwards this is a form of further protective energy.

The best colors of Dehexing Candles are Gray, Silver, Black and bi-colored Reversible Candles.

•Black: Absorbs anything coming to you.

•Gray: neutralizes anything coming to you.

-Silver: reflects the incoming energy back to the sender. The curse, jinx or crossing that was meant for you now rests on the sender. With the gray color, your energy must remain neutral.

Any situation which requires the use of a revising candle in addition to the dehexing candle is always a good combination   the Reversible Color is usually found in a combination of Red and Black, with the Black absorbing the incoming energy and the Red concentrating it, adding any tidbits of your making, and returning it to the sender with interest.

•"Devil" – Carved into the likeness of the devil, this candle`s purpose however lies within whichever direction you choose to work. .The color used in rituals is a matter of personal preference. Devil candles are used for exorcism rites, for spells to win the love of another, to clear one's home of dark forces, and for hexing an enemy.

Red for commanding lust and sex, or Stop sinister forces from keeping loved one from you

Green for collecting money owed or for gambler's luck,

Black for doing harm to an enemy or Rid home of dark forces you can use black candle in your rituals to either banish the devil and his influences or conjure him, and seek out his power as you see fit.

If you use it in your ritual, choose wisely in the path you tread.

Devil Candle w/ Wings, is used same way and plain Devil candle but also Ideal for Rituals of YATUK DINOIH, Luciferian and Satanic sorcery

Special Note:  I have never seen the Devil candle used in exorcism and never by the Catholic Church as they would feel that it really gives strength to the devil.  Therefor I would exercise caution in using it.

•"Divorce candle" (man and woman back to back with one candle wick between)

– usually black, although also made in Red either way its function is  to cause a couple to separate.

Dolphin: Ocean and water magick.  Promotes the oneness with nature and harmony with natural forces on all levels and planes

Double Action Candle ----  These candles are unique they are ½ black and the other in a symbolic color that represents the general situation  Double Action Candle Double action candles are two-color candles, the lower half almost always black, and the upper half either white, red or green. The symbology is that the combination of color repels the bad influences and at the same time draws the good vibrations. The black and white candles are used for spiritual or cleansing matters, the red and black for love, sex or energy problems, green and black are used for money, luck and success in rituals.

They symbolize the positive and negative influences in your life. It is used to draw positive things to you and reverse negative things away from you

Available in these three usual combinations:

Black/White (Entice the uplifting spiritual vibrations, drive away dark forces.)

Black/Green (Draw good luck get rid of bad situations.)

Black/Red (Attract love and affection, repel the dark influences

The best ones to use are the ones with the Black on the top and the color on the bottom to first banish and then bring in, but if the candle colors are reversed that is the color is first and then the black is on the bottom then turn it upside down, cut the candle burning end flat, and then on the flat bottom whittle it so it will burn.

Either way the black part must burn first and then the color section to banish bad things.

However if you want to have negative things happen to someone else, then burn the color side and then the black end, But I do not recommend that as things can back lash upon you.

Now some people will just whittle a burning wick end on the black part and then impale the candle in the middle on some safe sharp pointed thing and burn the candle at both ends so that both actions happen at the same time.  You may have to make a special holder for that and then have a metal tray underneath it to prevent fires.

Dragon:  Power and protection.  If you are into Dragon magick or workings this is an excellent candle to burn during your most potent personal protection spells or rituals. Anoint with Dragon's blood oil and burn Dragon's blood incense as well.

•"Eye in Pyramid Candle"--- burned for money spells such as money drawing. Usually Green in color with an “All Seeing Eye” like you see on the top of a pyramid on the U.S. 1 dollar bill.

See also Pyramid Candles

Floating Candles:  These do exactly what their name suggests they float in liquid, usually water.  These candles work well for employing equal balance of water and fire elements in your working, and work wonderfully for scrying. Simply fill a bowl with water, light the candles, set them afloat in the bowl, turn out the lights, relax, let the candles settle then gaze into the bowl

Glass Oil Candle: Though similar to the Floating Wick Candle by virtue of using oil instead of wax in a (glass) container, the Glass Oil Candle's wick does not float. It is suspended into the oil body from a separate metal or glass fixture. The Glass Oil Candle comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and is extremely useful in Magick as a Perpetual Flame or Altar Candle. The fragrant oils can be exchanged to match the Magick you are performing. The thick glass is usually safe and heat resistant.

The container usually has a small opening where new oil can be added without extinguishing the flame. As many of the containers are transparent, it is easy to see when the oil needs replacing.

As an Altar Candle for a magickal ritual, use the glass tapers. A neutral yet high vibrational oil in a thick crystal taper burns long after your Magick is complete.

When using the Glass Oil Candle in a magickal act, always imbue the container first with your will. Do not anoint the container however. Instead, with your will, imbue the oil meant to go into the container. In this way, the container has stored energy and power along with the oil.

SPECIAL NOTE:  As with any open flame candle burn in a very safe place out of reach of children and animals, if you live in an area that is prone to earthquakes do what you can to make it safe, if you live in an area prone to tornado's or hurricanes, if you are at home and are alerted, for safety put the flame out, you can always re-light it ritually after all danger has passed.

GUARDIAN ANGEL IMAGE CANDLE - White Guardian Angel Candle Light candle for protection or guidance.

Recite the Guardian Angel Prayer: Angel of God, my guardian dear to whom God's love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

The Guardian Flame Candle: There are many magicians who will only light a ritual candle with the "Sacred Flame" that has been dedicated to a Deity. This flame stands as a guardian in the home or temple. The glass Oil Candle is excellent for his purpose, this is much like in the Catholic church where they have a perpetual flame enclosed lamp called a Sanctuary Lamp, to indicate the presence of God at the altar.

HEART CANDLES Conjure a strong symbolism to romance,

burn red heart candles for luck in love

white heart candles for purity in love

pink heart candles for strengthening a friendship

Invocation Candle: An Altar Candle used to invoke a specific Deity. The Seven-Day Novena Candle is frequently used as an Invocation Candle as it is tall and will normally outlast other candles on the altar.  These can be either freestanding with a symbol of the deity carved on it or a glass enclosed candle.

Lucky Hotai----see Budda

By using your imagination and figuring out your intent, even these usual specialty candles could be used in a magickal way, either spells or rituals depending upon your intent.

For example a heart shaped candle could be used for a love spell, a star candle could be used for positive wishes, fruit for fertility, etc.   So don’t discount them even though they have not been purchased in a Magickal shop or web site.  All your mind and thoughts and what your intent is to guide you.

Candle Magick is one of the easiest and most effective ways to honor your Higher Power, call your Corners, meditate, change the energy of a space, cast a spell, contact your Spirit Guides, or simply set the mood for a ritual. It can also be used for Divination.

Candle Magick,  crosses nearly all cultures and religions. It is found in Wicca, Neopagan, Southern Hoodoo, Voudoun, Judaism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christian Traditions. Candle uses are many and varied, and there are many wonderful books written that go into great detail.

Color in candles is a relatively new invention and the colors are for beauty and to help YOU focus.

Color is very important in candle magic. Color has subtle influences and each one vibrates at a different frequency. Because of the different effects of color on the human psyche and the surrounding environment, different colored candles are used for different magical end-results

All that basic Candle Magick requires is a candle and your will to make it work. It can take 7 minutes or 7 days to work full candle burning rituals, and candle burning Magick is very easy to do! There are as many ways to do a candle burning spell or ritual as there are people who do them. They are charming and simple, and can stand alone or be a small part of a larger, more elaborate undertaking.

The first step in creating your personal candle ritual is choosing your candle. Any size or shape candle will work, but it should be a “virgin” candle-that is, one that has never been used. I recommend keeping a good selection of different candles on hand in a special cabinet or box reserved for your Magickal use-grabbing the leftover one from last night’s dinner really is not the best way to approach things!

I have a friend of mine when she sees an unusual candle or even a candle holder that has a special magical significance, she will buy it, of course depending upon her budget.  She has a cabinet dedicated to holding ritual candles that are new.  And she even, once she has meditated upon their possible use, label them for that use.

No matter what the candle that you use in ritual and spell work, the candle(s) must be new, never use candles that have already been used---you will confuse the energies.  And after spell work, it is important to properly and ritually dispose of these candles.

After I list the figure candles, I will do postings on the types of Jar Candles, then how to dress a candle, how to interpret how a candle reacts or talks, finally how to dispose of a used candle.  To complete all of this I will list the best basic books that cover candle magic as my final post on this focused subject.   All this will take time so do be patient.

•"Master Hand Candle" (hand holding a pillar candle) -- burned to gain control over a situation.   This is a particularly hard candle to find now a days, not too many spiritual supply places offer them.

Green and yellow for control over finances,

Pink and red for control over love situations,

Blue and white for healing and blessing spells.

Memorial Candles --- These are usually the very largest of the votive candles they can be without a glass jar and just in a candle hold but it is safer to use the ones that come in a glass jar. Ordinarily they are lit at midnight or sunrise to honor a birthday or anniversary or to remember a deceased loved one.
White is usually preferred.   I will refer to this type of candle in my next post on Jar candles.

Moon-shape candles---Usually crescent shape to be used for  Lunar magick.  Can replace Goddess figure in Goddess rituals. Use shape that corresponds to the aspect of the goddess IE: right hand crescent for maiden, Full for mother/lover, left hand crescent for waning or crone/wise woman.

Mummy---

Shaped like a mummy in an Egyptian sarcophagus , this candle is used primarily in a spell for power and success as well as protection as well as dealing  with or remove problems and situations that still linger from the past, even past lives, although many prefer to use it to ward off illness, dangerous situations, or the specter of death.

Anoint with Mummy Oil and place on an altar along with a burner filled with Power Incense. Light the incense first and allow it to burn for ten to fifteen minutes, while you concentrate on the project at hand. Then light the candle and repeat this chant several times: As the fragrance rises ever loftier, as the light glows ever lovelier, banish the forces which hinder my way, light the path to victory this day.

Red – power & success; for matters of business, property, for control over a situation and all other tangible possessions,  it is excellent for communication issues as well, and that goes for any kind of communication, not only with a loved one, but with a difficult manager at work, a friend, family member etc.

. Here are a few positive examples:

* You are planning a business project or any kind of project with someone who has a lot of different things on the go. You can use this candle to help that person focus their energy on the project at hand.

* You have an issue at work where you feel like you don't get heard at meetings and brain storming sessions - use this candle to help clear the way for your ideas to be heard.

Black--  Uncrossing & Jinx Removing and for family matters, relationships, bad mojo, curses, jinxes, hexes and emotion or emotional  problems from the past as well as  binding spells, and are also burned for occult power. Additionally, Mummy Candles may be used as doll-babies or "Voodoo Dolls” The Black Mummy candle spell's possibilities are almost endless and this candle magick is appropriate for any purpose in which you wish to send darkness, despair and bad luck.
